Use of Antipsychotics by children increase fivefold. The use of potent antipsychotic drugs to treat children and adolescents for problems like aggression and mood swings increased more than fivefold from 1993 to 2002, researchers reported yesterday. From 2000 to 2002, the new study found, more than 90 percent of the prescriptions analyzed were for the newer medications, and most of the patients were boys, predominantly Caucasian children, who were significantly more likely to see psychiatrists than other ethnic groups. // Callyfornia: Blacks vs. Latinos. A 17-year-old Venice High School student was fatally shot Monday after a fistfight between black and Latino students spilled onto the campus parking lot, police and witnesses said. // Nightstalker back in Court. Appellate lawyers for the convicted serial killer known as the “Night Stalker” say his trial attorneys were inexperienced and nearly guaranteed his conviction for the grisly killing spree that terrorized the state in the 1980s. The California Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Richard Ramirez’s case Tuesday. Ramirez, now 46, was sentenced to death in 1989 for 13 Los Angeles-area murders committed in 1984 and 1985. Satanic symbols were left at some murder scenes and some victims were forced to “swear to Satan” by the killer, who broke into homes through unlocked windows and doors. // UN: Sweden to Jail Liberia’s Taylor. Swedish lawmakers have approved a law that makes it possible for the Scandinavian country to imprison former Liberian President Charles Taylor if a U.N.-backed tribunal convicts him of war crimes, government officials said Thursday.
The decision by the Swedish Parliament could remove a major obstacle that has stalled the former African warlord’s trial in Sierra Leone. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nina Ersman said Sweden had not yet officially decided whether it would accept a request to take in Taylor. Such a step would need final approval from the government. // TNB – The unrepentent sex fiend who raped “Top Gun” actress Kelly McGillis two decades ago is about to go on trial again, for a vicious attack on two women in Greenwich Village. But prosecutors cannot grill Leroy Johnson Jr. about the earlier assault if he takes the stand, a judge ruled yesterday. Johnson, 38, was a teen thug with a juvenile record when he and an accomplice ambushed McGillis, then a Juilliard student, in her apartment in 1982. At knifepoint, they took turns violating her, threatening to kill her and bombarding her with racial slurs before fleeing after someone called the police. // TNB – A white woman said she was in shock after a black man threw a 10-inch chunk of concrete at her sport utility vehicle in what police were labeling a hate crime. McCandless said she made eye contact with the attacker before he threw the concrete. Carl Graves, of Amityville, threw the concrete at the SUV because the driver was white, Nassau County police Detective Lt. Karl Schoepp said. Graves and two friends were in the mall for a couple of hours Monday morning and were upset that the arcade and the movie theater were closed, Schoepp said. He said Graves, 20, told police “the mall had become too white.” // TJB: Jewish non-Hate Crime. LAKEWOOD — An altercation between a 43-year-old Orthodox Jewish man and 15-year-old black youth was not a bias crime, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Citing a “careful and meticulous review of the facts,” Prosecutor Thomas F. Kelaher cleared Elchanan Zimmerman of being motivated by race during an incident that led to the teacher at Lakewood’s Cheder School being charged with simple assault. “Although racist statements were apparently made by unknown parties in a crowd that formed, these statements would not elevate the incident to a bias crime,” Kelaher said in a prepared statement. // TJB: Indian Wig-Hats Sacrilegious. A wig made from Caucasian hair – the most highly sought-after material – could cost as much as $2,000. “It’s very hard to get good quality hair,” said Zahavi. “You need virgin hair that hasn’t been dyed and hasn’t been highlighted, and it’s getting harder and harder to get good hair that hasn’t been coloured these days.”
