Sweden loses patience with refugee champion role

Six years after his brother was beheaded by Iraqi insurgents, Riyad is still haunted by the memory of identifying the disfigured body and watching the mutilation on a video distributed by the killers.

Yet Riyad now has fresh worries to contend with: the threat of deportation from Sweden, which recently rejected his application for asylum. â€œThey murdered my brother and would have done the same to me,â€� he told an immigration official in a secretly recorded meeting broadcast on Radio Sweden.

â€œYes, I know that,â€� replied the official. â€œBut it doesnâ€™t count that they might do the same thing to you; you have to prove there is an actual threat.â€�

Riyad, who worked with his brother on a US army base, was drawn to Sweden by its reputation as the most welcoming European country for Iraqi asylum-seekers, having absorbed tens of thousands in the past decade. In the past two years, however, numbers have dropped sharply as Sweden shows signs of losing patience with its role as champion of refugee rights.

In 2007, 18,559 Iraqis sought asylum in Sweden and nearly three-quarters were accepted. Last year the number arriving was 2,297 â€“ and less than a quarter were granted asylum.

The decline can be explained partly by better security in Iraq. But experts say the main factor was a Swedish court ruling in 2008 placing a greater burden on refugees to prove they were in danger.

Tobias BillstrÃ¶m, Swedenâ€™s migration minister, insists there was no political involvement in the ruling, but the centre-right government has been quick to stress the courtâ€™s message. â€œNow you have to show there is a real threat,â€� he says. â€œYou cannot just turn up and say youâ€™re from Iraq.â€�

The tougher approach is welcomed by some Swedes, amid unease over the changing face of their traditionally homogenous society. More than a tenth of the population is now foreign-born, with Iraqis among the largest group.

Anti-immigration sentiment could make itself felt in next monthâ€™s general election, with opinion polls suggesting the far-right Sweden Democrats could win their first seat in parliament.

Few places feel the tension more than SÃ¶dertÃ¤lje, an industrial town where 8,000 Iraqis live, many in high-rise ghettos. Anders Lago, the townâ€™s Social Democratic mayor, says the strain on public services is unsustainable. â€œWe need a new system. SÃ¶dertÃ¤lje cannot take care of everybody.â€�

Behind Swedenâ€™s new approach lies frustration that other European Union states have not taken more refugees. Before the ruling, Sweden received about 60 per cent of Iraqi asylum applications in the EU.

If Stockholm is sending a message to other countries, critics say it has come at a heavy price for vulnerable refugees. It was among four European nations recently rebuked by the UNHCR for forcibly deporting asylum-seekers to Iraq despite the continuing violence.

Mikael Ribbenvik, director of legal affairs for the Swedish migration board, said his agency had issued new recommendations to take account of persecution of minorities in Iraq â€“ a sign, perhaps, Sweden is anxious not to let its humanitarian halo slip too far. But this may be too late for Riyad, who says he would be at risk in Iraq not only because of his past ties to the US military, but also his Christian faith. â€œI donâ€™t have to remain here,â€� he told Radio Sweden. â€œJust send me anywhere in the world â€“ except Iraq.â€�

Italy inspired by France to expel citizens from other EU states by September

Italy has said it intends to expel citizens from other EU states if they are not able to support themselves, in a move apparently inspired by France’s current crackdown on Roma.

Interior Minister Roberto Maroni told daily newspaper Corriere della Sera on Saturday (21 August) that French president Nicolas Sarkozy – whose recent actions include closing down Roma camps and deporting around 200 Roma to date – is “right.”

The minister, from the anti-immigrant Northern League Party, said that “if anything, it’s time to go a step further” and referred to the mandatory expulsion of EU citizens who do not meet certain criteria.

“Yes, expulsions just like those for illegal immigrants, not assisted or voluntary repatriations. Of course only for those who violate rules on requirements for living in another member state: a minimum level of income, adequate housing and not being a burden on the social welfare system of the country hosting them.”

“Many Roma are EU citizens but do not respect any of these requirements,” he said. But added, when asked if this would be discriminatory, that the policy should apply to all EU citizens and not just Roma.

“If anything, the problem is something else: unlike in France, many Roma and Sinti here have Italian citizenship. They have the right to remain here. Nothing can be done.”

Mr Maroni admitted that previous attempt by Rome to go in this direction were shot down by the European Commission but said he intends to re-raise the issue of automatic expulsions at a meeting of EU interior ministers in Paris on 6 September.

In 2008, the commission threatened Italy with legal action if it went ahead with a decree allowing the expulsion of other EU citizens facing two years of jail. It gave its blessing to a controversial proposal by Italy to fingerprint Roma, however.

Some in Italy have suggested there is a discrepancy between the relatively strong reaction by Brussels to Italy two years ago compared with its muted response to Mr Sarkozy’s policy towards the Roma community.

According to Mr Maroni this is due to an old “prejudice” whereby a policy carried out by a minister from the Northern League, a junior coalition partner in Rome’s right-wing government, is assumed to “violate human rights.”

France

Mr Sarkozy’s government deported around 10,000 Roma to Romania and Bulgaria last year but the current raids against against a planned total of 300 Roma camps come after the French president for the first time expressly linked immigration and crime.

The European Commission, for its part, has said it is monitoring the situation in France noting that any deportation decisions must be proportionate and carried out on a case-by-case basis, with human rights watchdogs already questioning whether these criteria are being fulfilled.

Meanwhile, critics of Mr Sarkozy’s policy have suggested that the Roma will simply return as soon as they are able.

They also suggest that Paris is contributing to a vicious circle due to its decision to maintain until 2014 rules restricting access to the labour market to nationals from Bulgaria and Romania – where the majority of Roma come from – and with it a means of supporting themselves.

British Villager arrested ‘for firing warning shots at gipsy children who trespassed on his land’

A carer said to have become so exasperated with trespassing traveller children that he fired a shot over their heads, has been arrested.

Christopher Bayfield is understood to have suffered repeated petty thefts after 1,000 travellers arrived for a Christian festival in a field next to the house he shares with his parents.

Just hours before he fired the warning shot, he had reported a theft from a car in the driveway.

And, after hearing noises outside the familyâ€™s Â£1million five-bedroom house in Swavesey, Cambridgeshire, he is said to have shouted at the children and fired the warning shot vertically into the air in â€˜exasperationâ€™.

The childrenâ€™s father contacted police when he learned a shot had been fired – but admitted his son had been in private land beside the house.

Cambridgeshire Police later confirmed the intruders were a five-year-old boy and girl of seven.

The travellers and gipsies arrived on the 30-acre field last week.

The landowner expected 30 people – instead, 200 caravans turned up. Soon, the village shop reported thefts by children and the village pub posted a notice saying that only residents would be admitted in an attempt to avoid trouble.

There were complaints that people had been urinating in public areas and saplings were stripped from nearby land.

Yesterday, Mr Bayfieldâ€™s family told how seven officers, five of whom were armed, arrived at the house late at night.

The 40-year-old, who looks after his seriously ill father Leslie, 85, was arrested on suspicion of firearm offences, interviewed and released on bail.

His weapon, which he normally uses it to kill rabbits on his vegetable patch, was confiscated.

His father, a retired businessman, said police had scared the family when they turned up.

Mr Bayfieldâ€™s sister Pippa, 43, who lives in Cambridge, said: â€˜There were five armed officers who turned up at about 11.30pm with a warrant.

â€˜They took away his clothing for analysis. I donâ€™t understand why – heâ€™s got a firearms licence so there would be residue on his clothes.â€™

Villagers said the â€˜mild-manneredâ€™ bachelor had been provoked into firing the shot on Thursday.

One said: â€˜I can only think it would have been exasperation. Theyâ€™d been at his fruit and veg all week.â€™

Neighbour John Smart, 78, said: â€˜There had been pilfering all week and when he heard something he thought enough was enough.â€™

Ralph Bayfield, 80, Mr Bayfieldâ€™s uncle from Benwick, Cambridgeshire, said: â€˜We have a big traveller problem in this area. Christopher has had two lawnmowers stolen.

â€˜While the police were investigating, someone broke into his car right under their noses. Christopherâ€™s father has cancer so this has been a big weight on his mind.â€™

The travellers, who were celebrating the Light and Life Gipsy Festival, said they had only come to â€˜preach the gospel of Jesus Christâ€™.

Senior pastor John Boyd said: â€˜Itâ€™s a terrible thing to do to a little boy collecting ladybirds. Thankfully this is a Christian family and the matter did not escalate as it could have.â€™

Mr Bayfield will find out next month whether he will be charged.

Expelled Roma promise to return to France

French authorities have said the majority are returning on a voluntary basis

But as the 124 people landed in Timisoara, in their native Romania, many said they planned to head straight back to France.

“Of course I’m thinking about returning to France. Life is better than in Romania,” said 26-year-old Ionut Balasz as he arrived in Romania.

Aurel Cioaba echoed his sentiment: “I was there [in France for] four months with my wife, and if I can’t get by here in Romania I will go back.”

President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the crackdown on Roma in late July as part of a larger “war” on people who outstay their work permits in France. But the programme has sparked criticism, with human rights group saying it targets a single ethnic group, which is illegal under EU law. French authorities deny the claim, saying the programme is voluntary.

France can repatriate Roma, even though they come from EU-member states Romania and Bulgaria, if they are unable to prove they can support themselves.

French authorities have said the majority are returning on a voluntary basis, given small sums of money – â‚¬300 (Â£245) for each adult and â‚¬100 for each child – to help them re-establish themselves at home.

Since Mr Sarkozy’s announcement of the crackdown, police have dismantled dozens of illegally installed gipsy camps, checked the situations of each inhabitant and prepared to whisk them to their Romanian homeland.

Nearly 100 gipsies were sent to Romania on two flights on Thursday. Similar flights were expected later this month and into September.

Tory press finds plenty of BNP supporters in Barking

nickinbarkingTHE Tory media are desperate to shore up David Camerons crumbling support. They can see voters switching loyalty, but its not from Labour to the Conservatives. Instead its from Labour to the British National Party, and thats got them worried.

This morning the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail, both unashamed mouthpeices for the Tories, carried extensive anti-BNP reports on our campaign in Barking in an effort to dissuade their readers from voting for the British National Party.

In both reports, journalists(?) Paul Bracchi and Tanya Gold found significant support for the British National Party.

Bracchi wrote in the Daily Mail:

The Cross of St George is blowing in the breeze outside Clive Neals end of terrace in Barking. Mr Neal is 61. He took early retirement from the Dagenham Ford plant in 2002 when car production finally stopped and many thousands of jobs were lost.

Gradually, since then, and probably before, he says, the street he still lives in, the area he grew up in, and the country he was once so proud of has changed beyond all recognition and no one certainly not anyone from the Labour or Conservative parties bothered to knock on his door and ask him what he thought about it, or the effect it might be having on his life.

Clive Neal used to vote Tory, but now he informs me, that I will be voting BNP, adding: Were losing our sense of what it is to be British and this upsets and frustrates me.

Farther up the road, single mother Karen Woodward, 39, says she will also be voting BNP. As will the woman, in her late 50s, at the pebble-dash terrace at No. 50, and the 34-year-old former builder, now registered disabled, at No. 52 (I’ve never voted BNP before, but Im going to because the country is in a mess).

The grandmother a few doors up? BNP. The middle-aged man at the house with a dodgy extension; BNP. His next-door neighbour; BNP. Two pensioners, behind the blue and brown doors, across the street; both BNP. A third pensioner, male, walking along the pavement. Yes, he would be voting BNP, too.

The underlying electoral statistics confirm the anecdotal evidence.

The Telegraphs Tanya Gold found equally enthusiastic support in a local pub.

The drinkers come out to talk. They are all ex-Labour, now BNP. Its housing, schools, hospitals and jobs, not colour, says one man. I believed in Old Labour but not New Labour. They have failed in this borough.

People have had enough, says a woman. We are being pushed to the back of the queue. My son couldnt get into the school of his choice. He has no chance of a council house.
You dont appreciate that our facilities are getting swamped, says another man. If we vote BNP, people might start listening to us. Because we have been abandoned by our government.

Providing further evidence that Labour voters are switching allegiance is the lack of posters in peoples windows.

Five years ago when Labour won the seat with a 7,000 majority, Barking was covered with vote Margaret Hodge posters. This weekend there were hardly any to be seen . . . and that is significant.

Hodges 7,000 majority is shrinking by the day because voters are switching to Nick Griffin and the British National Party.

Genocidal Immigration and Anti-Nativism in Britain

To become an ethnic minority in your own country over just a few decades suggests that government policy, as has recently been revealed, was indeed to ethnically cleanse the English from their homeland, although the multiculturalists who committed this wicked act of treason and betrayal never couched it in quite such plain language, preferring instead to frame mass immigration as a means of achieving social objectives.

These figures are not hysterical, nor are they the obtained from the research of paranoid periodicals. In 2007 The Guardian reported that Britain was heading toward a population of 70 million by 2031, but did not mention that the addition of an extra 10 million people whilst the indigenous population was simultaneously declining and emigrating required the importation of an awful lot more than just an extra 10 million immigrants.

Indeed, the liberals and the leftists are only too aware the indigenous population is being ethnically cleansed. In 2000 The Guardian predicted a white minority Britain by 2100, therefore tacitly admitting acceptance of population replacement, but erring only on the time frame necessary to achieve racial cleanliness.

The only thing that’s unique about Britain is that key members of the ruling party openly admit this, in writing. What Andrew Neather probably didn’t realize when he said this was that he inadvertently laid the basis for a new Nuremberg process where Multiculturalism is listed as an ideology with the stated intention of the physical destruction of whites everywhere. As such it constitutes an organized crime against humanity.

NATO, led by the USA, bombed the Serbs for “ethnic cleansing,” thereby facilitating the Islamic ethnic cleaning of Christians in the Balkans. So, if the Western Multicultural oligarchs are against ethnic cleansing, I guess they must now bomb Britain, where the authorities have publicly admitted that they are deliberately destroying the native population of their country. So why isn’t that happening? Could it be because similar anti-white policies are followed in all white majority Western nations without exception?

It’s time we realize that the humiliation, dispossession and gradual destruction of whites, from Canada to Sweden, is not the accidental result of a failed policy but the deliberate result of an evil policy, the largest campaign of ethnic cleansing in recorded world history. An this is happening in the “free and democratic West.” If “democracy” means the genocide of your people then what the hell is it good for?

I cannot take someone serious who uses the words “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” in that context. Just look at the word “genocide”: “Killing” is part of the word. Now when, say, a black woman immigrates to GB and then gives birth to a child there – how is that in ANY way related to KILLING somebody??? I can only shake my head in disbelief at the vile twisted minds that could come up with such a warped comparison. Even Orwell would be baffled at that crazy attempt at Doublespeak: giving birth = killing. Ingenious.

This is racism, in it’s purest and simplest form. Period. Now, you could maybe try and make the point that racism isn’t all that bad and so on… but please don’t insult our intelligence by claiming that this isn’t racisim. Really. It’s just too ridiculous…

Curious name, curious morals.

You read an article pointing out the territorial and cultural displacement of a race of people, and your response is to make the accusation of racism.

You must hate the white race with a passion!

The UN definition of genocide quoted does not include the word “killing” and nor do I make such an association in my article.

I imagine you have an extremely short attention span, so will repeat the UN definition of genocide for you, and the UN rights of indigenous peoples.

“Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part…”

“Indigenous peoples and individuals have the right not to be subjected to forced assimilation or destruction of their culture.”

“Any action which has the aim or effect of dispossessing them of their lands, territories or resources;”

You see, no mention of the word killing…

Perhaps a simple yes or no question might be in order.

Do you think the UN declarations above should be applied to the indigenous English?

Yes or no.

Failure to respond might well lead people to think you a rather silly fuchur.

In a landmark injunction at the Central London county court, a judge found that the BNP’s membership policy remained discriminatory, even after a direct whites-only clause was removed last month.

The judge, Paul Collins, ordered the BNP to remove two clauses from its constitution as they were indirectly racist towards non-white would-be members.

While one offending clause is largely an administrative matter – a requirement that all new members agree to a vetting visit from BNP officials, something the judge found could intimidate non-white applicants – the other spells out core beliefs.

This is a requirement for members to believe in the “continued creation, fostering, maintenance and existence” of an indigenous British race and action towards “stemming and reversing” migration.

Our enemies see concern for the interests of indigenous Whites as “racist”, and not being “racist” against alien interlopers takes precedence over the desire of native Whites to ensure our very existence. That they have the power to legalize their crimes does not absolve them of responsibility.

MORE than 50 million African workers are to be invited to Europe in a far-reaching secretive migration deal, the Daily Express can reveal today.

A controversial taxpayer-funded job centre opened in Mali this week is just the first step towards promoting free movement of people in Africa and the EU.

Brussels economists claim Britain and other EU states will need 56 million immigrant workers between them by 2050 to make up for the demographic decline due to falling birth rates and rising death rates across Europe.

The report, by the EU statistical agency Eurostat, warns that vast numbers of migrants could be needed to meet the shortfall in two years if Europe is to have a hope of funding the pension and health needs of its growing elderly population.

It states: Countries with low fertility rates could require a significant number of immigrants over the coming dec ades if they want to maintain the existing number of people of working age.

Having sufficient people of working age is vital for the economy and for tax revenue.

The report, by French MEP Francoise Castex, calls for immigrants to be given legal rights and access to social welfare provision such as benefits.

Ms Castex said: It is urgent that member states have a calm approach to immigration. To say yes, we need immigration it is not a new development, we must accept it.

The proposals include the creation of a blue card system, based on the American green card, that provides full working and welfare rights.

The UK Indepen dence Party leader Nigel Farage attacked the move as an outrage. He said: The sooner Britain gets back control of immigration policy, the better.

The proposals part of the Africa-EU Partnership signed in Portugal last December also warns of the negative effects of mass immigration and calls for better integration of African migrants.

It calls too for a compassionate approach to the eight million illegal immigrants already living in the EU.

It states: Irregular migrants must not be treated like criminals. Many risk their lives seeking freedom or the means
of subsistence in Europe. As long as the EU has a higher standard of living than those countries to its south and east, the temptation to come will exist especially if there are jobs to be had.

The declaration calls on the EU to assist African governments to set up migration information centres to better manage labour mobility bet ween Africa and the EU.

Yesterday the Daily Express revealed that, in an apparent contradiction of immigration policy, thousands of migrants like Kanoute Tieny from Mali are being given up to £5,500 in grants by the EU to return home to Africa.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy wants to implement an EU-wide immigration plan by the end of the year when he stands down as head of the Council of the European Union.

This body implements policy proposed by the European Commission and discussed by the European Parliament.

French immigration minis ter Brice Hortefeux has represented all the 27 EU states, including Britain, in a succession of whirlwind tours through west Africa to help create a strategy.

Last night the Home Office said the UK had nothing to do with this EU plan.

A Border Agency spokesperson said the initiative is aimed at promoting legal migration routes in the Schengen area of the EU which the UK opted out of. The area includes most but not all member states.

Baroness Jenny Tonge, a senior member of the British opposition party Liberal Democrats, has been sacked as her partys health policy spokeswoman in the House of Lords after she called on Israel to disprove allegations that its medical teams in Haiti harvested the organs of earthquake victims and sold them on for transplantations.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said Tonges comments had been wrong, distasteful and provocative and I recognize the deep and understandable distress they have caused to the Jewish community. While I do not believe that Jenny Tonge is anti-Semitic or racist, I regard her comments as wholly unacceptable.

He said Tonge apologized "unreservedly" for any offense she may have caused. The baroness is a patron of the news website Palestine Telegraph, which printed the allegations. In the past, Tonge often launched scathing attacks against Israel. In 2004, she told a pro-Palestinian lobby group on the issue of suicide attacks by Palestinians against Israel: "If I had to live in that situation and I say that advisedly I might just consider becoming [a suicide bomber] myself."

The Board of Deputies of British Jews welcomed Baroness Tonge’s dismissal, saying her support for an investigation into accusations of organ harvesting by the Israeli rescue teams was "outrageous and a calumny.

Baroness Tonge has promoted this libel against Israel by utilising historical themes that are classically deployed to attack the Jewish people. She has dishonored the noble efforts of Israelis who engaged in a selfless humanitarian effort to save lives in Haiti."-wtf-

The umbrella body of British Jews declared in a statement that "any further use of anti-Semitic rhetoric must result in Tonge’s expulsion from the party and loss of the whip."

DRESDEN, Germany (Reuters) At least 10,000 Germans formed a human chain in Dresden on Saturday and stopped neo-Nazis staging a funeral march to remember victims of the Allied air raid that flattened the city 65 years ago.

About 5,000 neo-Nazis, clad in black, had gathered at Dresden’s Neustadt station — where Nazis once packed trains with Jews bound for the Auschwitz concentration camp — hoping to stage Germany’s biggest far-right march since 1945.

In the past few years, the February 13 anniversary of the destruction of Dresden, in which 25,000 people were killed, has become a focus for neo-Nazis who describe the blanket bombardment as a "bombing Holocaust."

But large numbers of anti-neo-Nazi protesters, who turned out despite freezing temperatures, stopped the far-right sympathizers from getting into the town center.

"Stopping the Nazi march was a great success for the Nazi Free Alliance Dresden," said Alliance spokeswoman Lena Roth.

"It wasn’t easy — there were people injured in Nazi attacks and it was horribly cold, but it was worth it," she said.

Police reported isolated clashes between the two sides and at one point the 5,000-strong police force, with reinforcements drafted in from across Germany, used water cannons.

A spokesman said officers had made seven arrests but the violence police had feared appeared to have been avoided after organizers declared the far-right gathering over in the late afternoon and supporters gradually dispersed.

Some waved black, white and red flags and wore T-shirts with militaristic symbols. Others wore garments with pictures of Lancaster bombers with the slogan "Saviours of Democracy?"

"We are gathered here to remember one of the biggest war crimes of World War Two," Kai Pfuerstinger, deputy head of the far-right JLO Youth Corps East Germany, told the crowd earlier.

A debate about whether breaking public morale through the raids was justifiable has rumbled since the bombing, which started on the night of February 13, 1945, and flattened the city. The defeat of Hitler’s Nazis was imminent.

The wave of attacks, by British and U.S. bombers, used incendiary bombs which created an inferno that ripped through streets, burning and melting people and buildings alike.

Although a mainstream debate has taken place in the past few years about the extent to which Germans can view themselves as victims of a war they were responsible for, there is little sympathy for the views of militaristic neo-Nazi groups.

"February 13th, the day of the bombardment of Dresden, is abused by the right as a myth of sacrifice," said Wolfhart Goll of the Nazi Free Alliance.

Dresden has only in the last decade been restored to its former glory, complete with its trove of cultural treasures.

Senior politicians from Dresden and the state of Saxony and a representative of the Central Council of Jews laid wreaths at a cemetery where the victims of the bombardment are remembered.

Dozens of German words have for decades been taboo for native speakers because of the way those words were used by the Nazis.

Now, an 800-page dictionary has been published to serve as a guide to avoiding linguistic traps into which Germans can easily fall.

Terms such as "endloesung" (final solution) or "selektion" (selection) can quickly get the user into trouble, because the words acquired specific meanings and associations during the Third Reich.

"Endloesung" was the word used by the Nazi regime for its plan to exterminate the Jewish race, [sure it was] and it will forever be associated with Adolf Hitler’s genocidal "Final Solution to the Jewish Question."

"Selektion" is a term to avoid because of its use by the Nazis to refer to the death camp practice of "selecting" those to be executed.

"Lager" (camp) refers to the concentration camps in which millions died and is especially hurtful to survivors of the Nazi past.

The "Woerterbuch der Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung" (Dictionary of Coming to Terms With the Past) examines around 1,000 words and phrases everything from "Anschluss," used to refer to the "annexation" of Austria in 1938, to "Wehrmacht," the name of the Nazi-era armed forces. The guide aims to look at the meaning and usage of the terms as they have evolved from before World War II through the present.

"We don’t mean to wipe out those words from the German language for good," explains Thorsten Eitz, a co-author of the dictionary, in an interview with ABCNews.com. "But we want to make people more sensitive to the power of those words and phrases and their associations to the Nazis. We’re taking a close look at what roles such terms play in today’s Germany." Eitz, a German linguist at Duesseldorf’s Heinrich Heine University, and his co-author, German studies professor Georg Stötzel, have been working on the dictionary for about four years. The authors put the book together with the goal of "filling a gap on the market," says Eitz.

"We’ve been kicking around the idea for some time, especially since we’ve witnessed a kind of inflationary use of words and terms associated with the Nazis in the early 80′s and again in recent years," Eitz says. "You can be pretty sure to make headlines and thus we assume that often those terms are used deliberately for that reason only. Most of the time, though, the use of those taboo words in public discourse backfires and causes tremendous controversy."

The Cardinal of Cologne, Joachim Meisner, well-known for provoking controversy, caused a storm of criticism and faced resignation calls not too long ago for using the word "entartet" (degenerate) in a speech claiming modern art was at risk of "degenerating."

The word "entartet" has strong connotations with the persecution of artists accused by Nazis of producing "degenerated art," and the Cardinal’s remarks caused a real uproar among Germans sensitive about the country’s Nazi past.

The controversial Cardinal also was the target of strong criticism when he compared an abortion pill to Zyklon B, a poison gas used by the Nazis in the gas chambers.

His colleague, the late Archbishop Johannes Dyba of Fulda, coined the term "babycaust" during his anti-abortion campaign. The analogy to "Holocaust" stirred a heated debate across the country.

Similarly, the late head of the German Central Council of Jews, Paul Spiegel, came under fire in 2005 when he criticized the German policy by which Jews were allowed to move from the former Soviet Union, saying that Russian Jews were being "selected" to live in Germany. "The use of taboo words seems attractive to all kinds of groups," says Eitz. "To name but a few, even animal rights activists got front-page coverage recently with an anti-factory farming campaign titled ‘Holocaust on Your Plate.’ Now, that’s a no-no and they have been sharply criticized for using the term Holocaust, a term which should be exclusively used to describe the Nazi regime’s brutal murder of millions of people during the Third Reich."

There’s no specific target group for this dictionary, according to the author. He says it was written for average Germans or German speakers who are interested in the language. "Having said that," Eitz explains, "it was also written for the younger generation, people in their twenties, who have no idea of Third Reich connotations in the German language. Young people often don’t know that certain terms were used by the Nazis and that therefore using those terms can be found upsetting."

Wolfram John, a retired cameraman, tells ABCNews.com that people should keep in mind that language is all about how words are used. "It is still far more important to teach the youth of Germany intensively about all the facts of the Third Reich. The ‘Dictionary of Coming to Terms With the Past’ might be helpful in this context. But there shouldn’t be rigid rules: every train in Germany has an ‘Anschluss’ a ‘connection’ to another train. As always in life, the tone (and the intention) makes the music."

Nearly half of western Europeans believe jews exploit their ‘past persecution’ in order to extort money, a new Israeli report says.

The report, which the Jewish Agency conducted jointly with Israel‘s Information and Diaspora Ministry, found that 42 percent of those polled by the University of Bielefeld in Germany agreed that "jews exploit the past to extort money," Haaretz reported on Monday.

The countries in which the highest percentage of the population agreed with that statement were Poland and Spain.

There were more anti-Israeli incidents in 2009 than in any year since World War II, according to the annual Jewish Agency report released January 24.

During the first three months of 2009, immediately following Israel’s three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip, there were as many anti-Semitic incidents recorded as there had been for the entire year of 2008.

"With the start of the operation, a wave of acts of anti-Semitism started across the world," the report said, referring to last winter’s Operation Cast Lead, during which over 1,400 Palestinians were killed.

At the press conference in which the report was released, officials also referred to a film that accuses Israel of stealing human organs at the field hospital set up by the Israel Defense Forces in Haiti.

The Jewish Agency is in charge of immigration and the absorption of jews coming into Israel.
