I have received several emails over the last few days asking why I have not touched on the small fleet of ships on their way to Gaza with relief food and supplies for the people in the Gaza Strip concentration camp. I did not want to put up any articles, because that subject had already been covered by others in the real truth movement and I would only be parroting their own fine work in my blog. I, like others was hoping to congratulate the flotilla on its ability to send necessary supplies to the impoverished people of Gaza.
However, the ghastly results of the criminal state of Israel over the last 24 hours can not be avoided, even by myself. Nobody and I mean nobody must stand idly by while they massacre innocent civilians on board these ships. Israel attacks Gaza aid fleet Israeli forces have attacked a flotilla of aid-carrying ships aiming to break the country’s siege on Gaza. At least 19 people were killed and dozens injured when troops intercepted the convoy of ships dubbed the Freedom Flotilla early on Monday, Israeli radio reported. The flotilla was attacked in international waters, 65km off the Gaza coast. Avital Leibovich, an Israeli military spokeswoman, confirmed that the attack took place in international waters, saying: “This happened in waters outside of Israeli territory, but we have the right to defend ourselves.”
Footage from the flotilla’s lead vessel, the Mavi Marmara, showed armed Israeli soldiers boarding the ship and helicopters flying overhead. Al Jazeera’s Jamal Elshayyal, on board the Mavi Marmara, said Israeli troops had used live ammunition during the operation. The Israeli military said four soldiers had been wounded and claimed troops opened fire after “demonstrators onboard attacked the IDF Naval personnel with live fire and light weaponry including knives and clubs”. Free Gaza Movement, the organisers of the flotilla, however, said the troops opened fire as soon as they stormed the convoy. Our correspondent said that a white surrender flag was raised from the ship and there was no live fire coming from the passengers. Before losing communication with our correspondent, a voice in Hebrew was clearly heard saying: “Everyone shut up”. Israeli intervention Earlier, the Israeli navy had contacted the captain of the Mavi Marmara, asking him to identify himself and say where the ship was headed. Shortly after, two Israeli naval vessels had flanked the flotilla on either side, but at a distance. Organisers of the flotilla carrying 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid then diverted their ships and slowed down to avoid a confrontation during the night. They also issued all passengers life jackets and asked them to remain below deck. Al Jazeera’s Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from Jerusalem, said the Israeli action was surprising. “All the images being shown from the activists on board those ships show clearly that they were civilians and peaceful in nature, with medical supplies on board. So it will surprise many in the international community to learn what could have possibly led to this type of confrontation,” he said. Meanwhile, Israeli police have been put on a heightened state of alert across the country to prevent any civil disturbances. Sheikh Raed Salah,a leading member of the Islamic Movement who was on board the ship, was reported to have been seriously injured. He was being treated in Israel’s Tal Hasharon hospital. In Um Al Faham, the stronghold of the Islamic movement in Israel and the birth place of Salah, preparations for mass demonstrations were under way. Protests Condemnation has been quick to pour in after the Israeli action. Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, officially declared a three-day state of mourning over Monday’s deaths. Turkey, Spain, Greece, Denmark and Sweden have all summoned the Israeli ambassador’s in their respective countries to protest against the deadly assault. Thousands of Turkish protesters tried to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul soon after the news of the operation broke. The protesters shouted “Damn Israel” as police blocked them. “(The interception on the convoy) is unacceptable … Israel will have to endure the consequences of this behaviour,” the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement. Ismail Haniya, the Hamas leader in Gaza, has also dubbed the Israeli action as “barbaric”. Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists, including a Nobel laureate and several European legislators, were with the flotilla, aiming to reach Gaza in defiance of an Israeli embargo. The convoy came from the UK, Ireland, Algeria, Kuwait, Greece and Turkey, and was comprised of about 700 people from 50 nationalities. But Israel had said it would not allow the flotilla to reach the Gaza Strip and vowed to stop the six ships from reaching the coastal Palestinian territory. The flotilla had set sail from a port in Cyprus on Sunday and aimed to reach Gaza by Monday morning. Israel said the boats were embarking on “an act of provocation” against the Israeli military, rather than providing aid, and that it had issued warrants to prohibit their entrance to Gaza. It asserted that the flotilla would be breaking international law by landing in Gaza, a claim the organisers rejected.
NTS Notes: I put into my own title for this article the fact that the compliant Zionist Jewish controlled media outlets all over the world have so far refused to even put up any information about this massacre! This is absolutely astounding and a travesty against all humanity.
We must all demand that so called “news” organizations, and all media outlets cover this travesty. This is an attack on unarmed people in international waters, which is not only a violation of all international laws, but is an act of piracy! The world must immediately demand action against Israel for this murder, and that criminal state must be held accountable for this heinous crime.
I am waiting to see what the Zionist stooges and flunkies in the US Government will say about this criminal murderous action….. Guaranteed there will be some media spin coming soon to make Israel look good for this act of blatant murder. Murder is murder, and we must all demand action to bring these murderers to justice.
As I have said, the freedom flotilla with humanitarian aid to Gaza has been covered extremely well by other bloggers, and I mistakenly have not put up any articles about it in my own blog, and decided to concentrate on other subjects. I will not make that mistake again.

Few people today realize that in 1976 the United States Congress passed an important bill called the Symington Agreement that prohibited any dealings, aid, or military shipments, to any country that has not signed the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty. That agreement stands today, and there has been absolutely no bill to repeal that act for the last 34 years.

NTS Notes: THIS is one of the most important pieces of material to come out in the last few years that verifies the existence of Israel’s Nuclear Arsenal. Israel is NOT a signor of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, and therefore the Symington Agreement applies almost exclusively to the Zionist Jewish state.
The fact is that with the Symington Agreement, ALL of the “aid”, armaments, and dealings with Israel for the last 34 years are illegal, and totally null and void. It is up to the American people therefore to demand that the United States automatically cease any dealings with Zionist Israel, and demand that the 200+ BILLION dollars given to that corrupt state for the last 34 years be returned to the United States.
Don’t hold your breath that the US will enact the Symington Agreement with their masters in Israel. In March, a South Korean corvette mysteriously exploded, and sank off the coast of South Korea, killing dozens of its sailors on board. From the beginning, there was wide speculation that North Korea was involved in the sinking, with the assumption that a North Korean submarine possibly torpedoed the ship.
(Reuters) – Investigators probing the deadly sinking of a South Korean navy ship in March near the North have concluded that a torpedo was the source of an explosion that destroyed the vessel, a news report said on Friday.
The team of South Korean and foreign investigators found traces of explosives used in torpedoes on several parts of the sunken ship as well as pieces of composite metal used in such weapons, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said quoting a senior government official.
South Korean officials have not officially accused the North but made little secret of their belief Pyongyang deliberately torpedoed the 1,200-tonne corvette Cheonan in March near their disputed border in retaliation of a naval firefight last year.
The metallic debris and chemical residue appear to be consistent with a type of torpedo made in Germany, indicating the North may have been trying to disguise its involvement by avoiding arms made by allies China and Russia, Yonhap quoted the official as saying.
North Korea has denied involvement and accused South Korean President Lee Myung-bak’s government of trying to use the incident for political gains ahead of local elections in June.

But lo, and behold, here comes the compliant Zionist Jewish controlled House of Representatives in Washington giving even MORE money to the criminal Zionist state of Israel, while American citizens are now starving on the streets of that once great nation. Despite moving at a snail’s pace on most policy decisions, the Obama Administration was still able to muster surprising alacrity when it came down to providing Israel with additionalmoney.
So exactly one week after President Obama decided that the US should provide Israel with an extra $205 million in military aid to pay for its “Iron Dome” missile defense system, the House of Representatives passed the measure, with a 410-4 margin.
The first phase of development, test runs, and manufacture of the system is expected to cost NIS 800 million, meaning the US funding will pay for materially all of this phase. The $205 million is above and beyond the roughly $3 billion in military aid the US sends to Israel annually.
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman said the vote was vital, citing “the looming threat of a nuclear-armed Iran.” Of course it could be pointed out yet again that America’s own National Intelligence Estimate shows Iran having no such program, but in this case it doesn’t even matter.
The Iron Dome system is intended for “very short range” rocket fire, primarily the intermittent rockets from the Gaza Strip that hit open fields in southern Israel, and would be completely useless against any missile from as far away as Iran, nuclear or otherwise.
In fact, this was one of the major reasons Israel was seeking the money, as many questioned the wisdom of spending $50,000 per missile to shoot down commodity rockets that cost only a few hundreds dollars apiece, and the Israeli military declined to include the project in its own budget.
The four Representatives voting against the resolution were John Conyers (D – MI), Dennis Kucinich (D – OH), Ron Paul (R – TX), and Pete Stark (D – CA)

The Revolutionary Navy searched a French and an Italian vessel for “environmental” checks, buzzed the U.S. Eisenhower in what American officials called a “close encounter,” and patrolled the Gulf, also known as the Straits of Hormuz, stopping and checking destroyers and cargo ships.
The Iranian Air Force also drove away a U.S. reconnaissance drone that was monitoring Iran’s massive Gulf military exercises that concluded last Thursday.
During and after the war games, Tehran issued daily press releases boasting of new and advanced speed boats, an anti-submarine torpedo and advanced arms for attacking ships.
Ben-David noted, “While the press focuses on the Iranian military exercises, uranium enrichment, and long-range missile development, the navies of dozens of countries have been relatively quietly gravitating toward the Persian Gulf. “
The war games exercises in the Gulf sent a clear signal to the West regarding what may be in store if it succeeds in placing tough sanctions against Iran as a way to try to force it to comply with international rules on the development of its nuclear program.
Iran’s government and semi-official media reported that the Revolutionary Guards tested a new speedboat that can destroy enemy ships, sending a pointed reminder that it is capable of blocking the Gulf. Iran also successfully fired an anti-submarine torpedo durng the war games, Iran’s Press TV reported. “The submarines had managed to enter the waters of the hypothetical enemy and pass the enemy’s linking lines,” it stated.
Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the war games aimed to demonstrate that Iran has full control over shipping activities in the Gulf area.
Armed Forces Commander Major General Ataollah Salehi announced Tuesday that two medium-range cruise missiles were launched from Iran’s southern coast and hit mock targets that were moving on the sea. Iranian news agencies said the missile also can evade radar systems because it flies at a low altitude.
“It’s past the epoch when America would change the regime in a country by just dispatching a warship,” Salehi added. “We have been able to challenge the U.S. not only in the sea but also in all international arenas.”
Israel Aerospace Industries chairman Yair Shamir commented that the cruise missile “is an extremely serious danger.” He noted that the missile was supplied by Ukraine before being upgraded in Iran.
The Air Force also claimed successes. Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Air Force for Operations General Seyed Mohammad Alawi told Fars News Agency that Phantom warplanes fired new missiles that hit and destroyed their targets. (IsraelNationalNews.com)

Iran knows that its international commerce and trade depends on the flow of petroleum through the Straits of Hormuz and there is absolutely no way, short of an attack on its own soil, that the Iranian leadership would ever consider closing the straits, and “wreck the Western economies” as this report erroneously claims. Therefore this is nothing more than more Israeli propaganda BS at its smelliest!

The Ongoing Erasure of Palestine

ZNet, May 15, 2010 The Zionist movement and the Israeli state are in the last stages of achieving effective sovereignty over all of historic Palestine. Jewish ownership of the entire land of Palestine has been the ideological sine qua non of the state and of its progenitor, Zionism, from the outset. This central goal has been consistently obfuscated by, among many other ploys, issues of “security”; eternal victimization, the Nazi Holocaust and demands of “recognition” both of the right of Israel to exist in general and specifically as a “Jewish State.” The Israeli nomenclature, “Judaization” of the land, first entered general public discourse in 1976, during the massive land confiscations of the country’s Palestinian citizens of the Galilee. We must acknowledge that we are witnessing the Judaization of what remains to Palestinians of historic Palestine (with the possible exception of the Gaza Strip). Failure to understand the process of Judaization, on the one hand, and the concomitant erasure of Palestinian WUJUD (existence), in all its forms, on the other hand, dooms all of us to continue granting Israel and its supporters the power to accomplish the process of negating Palestinian identity and nationhood. Israel continues to dispossess as many Palestinians as possible. Self-governance is a chimera. ‘Legal’ manipulations; confiscation; expulsion and brute force are the reality. It is my intention to avoid the old jargon and to underscore the reality we are facing, by: first, Examining and illuminating current Palestinian existence in historic Palestine; second, by candidly pursuing the historical process of the Judaization of the country; and, third, by exploring the roles available to people seeking justice for the Palestinian people. Therefore, we are not chasing headlines and trying to be “relevant”; real relevance must be reserved to the essence of Zionist aims and objectives no matter what Netanyahu chooses to say one day about the Palestinian state, or what Obama might say about Israel’s construction of colonies. Almost six months ago, the new US president told Israel’s leaders to put a freeze on building colonies. According to Ha’aretz, by the end of August (2009), the Obama administration agreed to Israel’s request to remove East Jerusalem from negotiations on the “impending” settlement freeze. According to both Israeli officials and Western diplomats, U.S. envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell recognized the fact that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would not announce a settlement freeze in East Jerusalem. The officials said the U.S. would not endorse new construction there, but would not demand that Tel Aviv publicly announce a freeze. The term freeze is not in the vocabulary of Netanyahu or that of his cabinet ministers; their program, whose cornerstone is colonial settlement and ethnic cleansing, precludes a territorial compromise. The land extending between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean, they believe, has space for only one state — Israel. Therefore, waiting for Obama to obtain Palestinians independence is an exercise in futility. This is indeed what we learn from reviewing contextual Zionist history before and after 1967. Israel’s principal pursuits have been land, water, fertility, strategic locations, and the minimum number of native population in the interest of demographic “security.” Again, a territorial compromise is not in the offing. Meanwhile, US policy will not be able to reconcile the pronounced ambitions of George Mitchell, seeking a negotiated settlement, and those of General Keith Dayton, who has been exacerbating the civil conflict between Hamas and Fateh and training Fateh militias as anti-resistance forces. The machinations of Elliot Abrams of the Iran Contra days have not been abandoned either with the change of personnel in the White House; General Dayton has seen to it that while Israel keeps expanding and the occupation becomes harsher and harsher, Palestinian resistance is being transformed into a quisling. The target of Dayton’s and Mohammed Dahlan’s militia is not the occupation; it is the resistance, and that is billed as law and order. With no inclinations towards a genuine peace settlement, Israel continues the land grab and the Palestinians continue to experience an ongoing Nakba. Some might prefer to call it a second Nakba. What was the first Nakba about after all? Was it not about Loss of land and water, ethnic cleansing, annexation and Judaization? This is exactly what is going on at present…a continuation of 1948. The colonization of Ras al-Amoud and Sheikh Jarrah which began in 2009 is not different from the colonization of Qatamoun, Jaffa Street, Talbiyeh and the rest of what became known as West Jerusalem after 1948. During the last week of August 2009, Israeli authorities approved plans to build hundreds of settler units in the heart of Arab East Jerusalem. The planned new colonies in the heart of the densely populated Arab neighborhood of Ras Al-Amoud are bound to kill the possibility of East Jerusalem becoming the future capital of a prospective Palestinian state.Hence the relevance of 1948 and the need to study Israel’s ongoing expansion in the context of al-Nakba. Nor has there been a serious improvement in the response of the self-appointed Palestinian leaders to this colonial settlement and ethnic cleansing. The present leadership’s strategy is built on waiting for Washington to deliver independence and restrain Israeli territorial expansion. And yet, Israel continues to demand Arab normalization, which is worse than acquiescence and equal to collusion in a second Nakba. The two Palestinian meetings held in Bethlehem and Ramallah during the month of August 2009 were held under the watchful eyes of the occupation. Only Fateh members loyal to Mahmoud Abbas were allowed to enter the West Bank and participate in the election of delegates to the Fateh Revolutionary Council and Central Committee. Likewise, only loyalists were allowed to attend the hurriedly assembled Palestine National Council meeting in Ramallah held to fill vacancies with Abbas loyalists. With the two top Palestinian bodies secured under Abbas, with the implicit agreement of Netanyahu and Dayton, the transformation of the resistance is complete, and the second Nakba goes on. Today, not unlike 1948, Palestinian leadership is bungling; US imperialism and hegemony are on the rise. Israel is governed by Iron Wall adherents, and thus unrestrained. The Arab states, which were inept in 1948, are now down-right complicit. Egypt and Jordan not only enforce the Israeli siege on Gaza civilians, but they also provide training camps to the Fateh quislings, in order to enable them to do the job of the Israeli army, and camouflage the occupation. Palestinian cities in the Oslo-designated “A” areas convey a façade of normalcy under Dayton’s military engineering, under Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s bureaucratic “reforms,” and under Netanyahu’s economic “peace.” It is becoming increasingly clear that the long diplomatic paralysis and the impediments to a peaceful solution capable of yielding two independent and contiguous states, living side by side in the Middle East, are embedded in the “peace process” whose gridlock reveals no shortage of resolve, and in the Zionist consensus that pre-1948 Palestine from the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea is a single state under exclusive Israeli sovereignty. As long as the termination of the Israeli occupation is not on the active Israeli agenda, and as long as the political forces in Israel are united in their rejection of a contiguous, viable and practicable Palestinian state, living side by side in peace with Israel, the longest occupation in history will continue unabated. Peace, therefore, will not be at hand as long as this ailing peace process fails to incorporate the essentials of the Palestine question: the 1948 Nakba is not recognized for what it is — a form of ethnic cleansing, a colonial enterprise which covets the land without the people. Peace has also remained elusive as long as the 1967 occupation continues to be entrenched as a form of what the late Israeli sociologist Baruch Kimmerling called politicide (political genocide) in a book under that title. He defined it as “a “process that has as its ultimate goal the dissolution of the Palestinian people’s existence as a legitimate national, social, and economic entity, which may also include partial or total ethnic cleansing.” Politicide, which complements erasure, is a process that covers a wide range of social, political, military and bureaucratic activities whose goal is to destroy the political and national existence of a whole community of people, and thus deny it the possibility of self-determination. This is what Israel has been doing to the Palestinian people, persistently between 1948 and the present — destroying the very fabric of the Palestinian nation and obliterating the Palestinian WUJOUD. Gary Zatzman uncovered a key difference between apartheid and Zionism in Dissident Voice (2005): “For all its serious and undoubted evils and the numerous crimes against humanity committed in its name, including physical slaughters, South African white-racist apartheid was not premised on committing genocide. Zionism, on the other hand, has been committed to dissolving the social, cultural, political and economic integrity of the Palestinian people, i.e., genocide, from the outset, at least as early as Theodore Herzl’s injunction in his diaries that the ‘transfer’ of the Palestinian ‘penniless population’ elsewhere be conducted ‘discreetly and circumspectly.’” The process is still ongoing, having included the invasions of 1967, 1976, 1982, 2002 (massacre of Jenin), 2006, and now the recent Gaza Massacre (2008/09). Over the three-week period, it was estimated that a million and a half tons of explosives were dropped on the Gaza Strip, home to 1.5 million people, making it the most densely crowded area in the world, where it is difficult to distinguish civilians from fighters. In the 22 days of relentless assault, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) put the Palestinian death toll at a total of 1,417 of which 926 were civilians, including 313 children and 116 women. Non-combatant police officers constituted 255, and 236 combatants were killed, representing 16.7% of the total deaths. The number of civilian fatalities included sixteen medics and four journalists. The number of wounded was approximately 5,500, of which two-thirds were civilians. Numerous schools, mosques, hospitals, residential and commercial buildings, and United Nations facilities were obliterated. In a major 49-page report on “Gaza’s Unfinished Business,” published on 23 April, 2009, the International Crisis Group warned that Gaza could once again reach the boiling point. Gaza, it says, is an explosion waiting to happen. It lists the toll from Israel’s callous 22-day battering in December-January, 2009 as 1,430 Gazans killed, over 5,300 wounded, 90,000 made homeless, Gaza’s seven main textile factories damaged and closed down, 22 of the 29 concrete factories devastated, whole industrial zones flattened, and 60 per cent of agricultural land near the border with Israel harmed, leading to a virtual halt of agribusiness. Israel’s deliberately disproportionate response to Hamas’ home-made rockets must be seen as an attempt to destroy the Palestinians’ will to fight. If that was indeed the aim, it has not succeeded, but nor is Palestinian statehood any closer. What happened in Gaza in 2008/09 is nothing short of another Nakba. This time, however, it was granted a license from the biggest super power. The United States has long opposed a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, consistent with the global consensus: total withdrawal to the 1967 borders, the establishment of a sovereign, contiguous, Palestinian state, endorsement of a non-rhetorical two-state solution, and the annulment of the annexation of Arab East Jerusalem. On the contrary, neither any Israeli government since 1967, nor any American Administration has ever pondered the issue of total withdrawal seriously or met the requisites of the global consensus. “A culture of impunity in the region has existed for too long,” Goldstone told the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) when presenting his report. “The lack of accountability for war crimes and possible war crimes against humanity has reached a crisis point,” he added. The Obama administration, the US media, and both leaderships of Congress are part of the problem; therefore, America has not been and will not be part of the solution.

US President Barack Obama wants Congress to pay Israel more than $200 million to fund a new missile system, the White House spokesman says.
Obama has asked Congress to approve the aid so that Israel could deploy a controversial missile system called the “Iron Dome.”
White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said on Thursday that Washington recognizes the need for Israel to have such a system.
Israel has completed tests in January on the short-range anti-missile system which is designed to intercept rockets and artillery shells.
“As the president has repeatedly said, our commitment to Israel’s security is unshakable and our defense relationship is stronger than ever,” said Vietor.

After several welcome weeks of calm, chatter about the northern border and the eastern front has resumed.
A synopsis of the declarations of the past 48 hours: The prime minister accused Iran of trying to provoke war between Syria and Israel; the minister for strategic affairs reiterated that a military option exists against Iran’s nuclear program; Iran’s parliamentary speaker threatened a “final and decisive war” against Israel; Lebanon’s prime minister expressed support for Hezbollah’s right to have Scud missiles in its arsenal; Syria’s president warned of “the demise of the peace process”; and Russia’s president, visiting Damascus, said he fears a catastrophe in the region.
A conflagration in the north sometime in the near future could result from one of three developments: escalation between Israel and Iran over the latter’s nuclear program; Hezbollah’s efforts to exact revenge for the 2008 killing of senior operative Imad Mughniyeh; or an Israeli attack on an arms convoy from Syria to Hezbollah.
But developments on the Iranian front depend on the results of the American initiative to impose stricter sanctions, which is expected to be discussed at the Security Council only next month. And all attempts by Hezbollah to strike at Israeli targets abroad have so far failed.
Thus most of the tension over the past two months has centered on the third issue: Israel’s concern about the transfer of Scuds and advanced Syrian M-600 rockets to Hezbollah.
Concern over a possible confrontation in the north, in view of Hezbollah’s growing strength, is becoming an international issue.
Now, Russian President Dimitry Medvedev has joined the effort to restrain Syria and Hezbollah and thereby avoid war.
But since neither Israel, Syria nor Hezbollah seem to have any interest in a clash this summer, it may be that news of the missile transfers was actually released to diminish the chances of war.
All this is also understood by the Syrians. The question is how they interpret Benjamin Netanyahu’s observation of a reservist training exercise in Northern Command yesterday.
The Israel Defense Forces says the visit was planned well in advance. But the other side might conclude the opposite.
Earlier this year, when Defense Minister Ehud Barak told senior officers that peace with Syria is vital and warned against another war, Syria suspected that his statements actually hinted at plans for an Israeli offensive – and therefore raised its forces’ alert level.

Obama Administration Continues to Supply Israel with Advanced Weapons

GLORIA Center, May 9, 2010 I have repeatedly pointed out that as of now the Obama Administration has never put any material pressure on Israel. There are wild rumors and irresponsible materials floating around to the contrary. They aren’t true. As proof, for example, take the article by Barbara Opall-Rome in Defense News, May 3, 2010, “U.S. Backs Israeli Munitions Upgrades.” She writes of “ever-expanding bilateral security ties unharmed by the unusually high-profile political rift” that took place temporarily. In fact, the United States is equipping Israel with GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs for its F-15I fighter-bombers and this will be followed by the same system on F-16I planes. These 250-pound bombs are called bunker busters because they are smart bombs that will go through more than six feet of reinforced concrete. In addition, Israel has equipped F-15Is to carry the 5,000-pound-class GBU-28 Hard Target Penetrator, designed to burrow 100 feet into earth or 20 feet into concrete. The Israel Air Force is also receiving the Laser-Guided Joint Direct Attack Munitions (LJDAM), developed by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems and Israel’s Elbit Systems and able to direct smart bombs more accurately. To put it bluntly, GBU-39s can be used against simpler installations like arms-smuggling tunnels dug by Hamas between Egypt and the Gaza Strip along with Hizballah field fortifications. The GBU-28s could be fired at stronger Hizballah installations. They could also be used on Iranian nuclear weapons or missile installations some day. Clearly, the U.S. government is neither urging nor advocating such an action and may never do so. But it has not blocked the possibility in terms of weaponry either. |

I think we are ready for a new definition. It is the neoconservative response to the argument that an Israeli bombing attack on Iran would put American soldiers in the Middle East at serious risk.
That argument is based on the fact that an attack by Israel would be viewed as an attack by America and could reverberate against US interests worldwide (including attacks here in the United States).
It is hard to contest that point — especially after General Petraeus said that the US military has to deal with the general perception in the Middle East that the United States and Israel are one and the same. (This is also the AIPAC line, which insists — quoting from a staff-written Joseph Biden speech — that there is “simply no space between the US and Israel when it comes to security, none. No space.”)
So, what should the United States do? Do we stop Israel from attacking Iran and jeopardizing our interests by proxy?
Of course not.
The new line coming down from the neoconservatives is that the United States should do the job itself.
Elliot Abrams, a national security adviser to George W. Bush, told the Zionist Organization of America on April 25 that “I believe Israel will act, and I hope the U.S. will.”
Steve Rosen, the former AIPAC guru, now an aide to Daniel Pipes — who runs a racist website about Arabs and Muslims — told the same group:
The majority of Americans support force on Iran, yet there’s a taboo against saying we must force them now…The U.S. would be more efficient than Israel at suppressing Iran. We have to have the ability to stare directly into the light bulb.
As usual, Rosen talks in code. “Stare directly into the light bulb.” Maybe he means mushroom cloud, which has a similar shape.
At this point, it appears to be only the formerly indicted (Rosen for espionage, Abrams for lying to Congress — though only Abrams was convicted) who are pushing for a US attack rather than an Israeli one. The other neocons still are eager to get their war on but they want Israel to do the job.
For them, war is a game and they want their guys to vanquish the other team. I mean, a Redskins fan may get some pleasure if the San Francisco 49ers crush the Dallas Cowboys, but it’s infinitely more awesome when their beloved Redskins do it.
But watch this space. Steve Rosen and Elliot Abrams are key neocon and lobby figures (despite their embarrassing past lives). And they are very persuasive. We’ll see what happens.
Meanwhile, the Israel-can-do-no-wrong faction, which normally dismisses Israel’s critics as irrelevant, are becoming increasingly strident.
A few examples.
Here is top AIPAC official Jonathan Kessler, threatening that AIPAC will use the same tactics to stifle dissent on American campuses that it uses with Congress. (See Video.)
“How are we going to beat back the anti-Israel divestment resolution at Berkeley?” said Jonathan Kessler, leadership development director for AIPAC, at a recent conference of the lobbying group. “We’re going to make sure that pro-Israel students take over the student government and reverse the vote. This is how AIPAC operates in our nation’s capitol. This is how AIPAC must operate on our nation’s campuses.”
Certain members of Congress are no less heavy-handed.
Sen. Chuck Schumer told a New York radio station last week that after the Obama administration hit Israel hard on its settlement policy, “I called up Rahm Emanuel and I called up the White House and I said, ‘If you don’t retract that statement you are going to hear me publicly blast you on this.’”
He added that there were two groups within the White House. One would give Israel the usual pass and the other wants the US to put pressure on Israel (and Palestinians).
“We’re pushing hard to make sure the right side wins and if not we’ll have to take it to the next step,” he said.
He concluded that God, himself, deputized him to be Israel’s man in the Senate:
“You know, my name …. comes from the word shomer, guardian, watcher. My ancestors were guardians of the ghetto wall in Chortkov. And I believe Hashem [Orthodox for God] actually gave me that name. One of my roles, very important in the United States senate, is to be a shomer — to be a or the shomer Yisrael. And I will continue to be that with every bone in my body …”
Then there are these quotes from Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Eliot Engel (D-NY), and Anthony Weiner (D-NY) to the Zionist Organization of America that is currently organizing opposition to President Obama and to any negotiations with Palestinians. Its leader, Morton Klein, is well-known for the hate speech he directs at Arabs and Muslims. If ZOA was a Muslim organization, these same members of Congress would be demanding that it be investigated for its hate rhetoric but, for these extremists, 30 House members show up for their banquet.
Nadler:
“Settlements illegal? – ‘they’re not as far as I’m concerned…There’s no immediate prospect of a (peace) settlement that can be enforced.’…”
Engel:
Israel is the ‘best ally the United States has in the Middle East, but I would argue the best ally in the world.’…If US pressures Israel ‘you’re going to hear it from me.
Aid to Palestinians until the Palestinians return to the negotiating table, we should not give them another dollar, another shekel…A lot we need to do & ZOA is doing it…We are patriotic Americans when we stand up for Eretz Israel.
And on May 6, in Room 2261 Rayburn House Office Building at 2 PM, Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) will host a session on the subject: “If terrorists Are Glorified, How Can There Be Peace?”
The one speaker will be Itamar Marcus, founder and director of Palestinian Media Watch. PMW is a nasty organization dedicated to the proposition that all Palestinians — Fatah, Hamas, whatever — are the same and should be treated as the terrorists they are.
Of course, that view contradicts US policy, which is built on the assumption (demonstrated by their conduct) that the Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad are dedicated to peace with Israel and are ideal negotiating partners for the Israeli government. (Surprisingly, the Netanyahu government agrees.)
Nonetheless, a United States Congressman is using his position to promote an organization whose sole purpose is smearing an American ally (the government of Abbas and Fayyad) and subverting US policy in the Middle East (support for the two-state solution). What a disgrace.
Sherman should cancel his Hatefest On The Hill. But he won’t because Sherman, like so many others in both chambers, knows no limits when it comes to defending the occupation. Even when they bolt to the right of the Israeli government.
Bottom line: none of these legislators think it is appropriate to criticize Israeli policies because, by definition, the Israeli government’s position is always right. Besides, who are they to criticize the Israelis despite Congress giving Israel more aid than any other country? And even though every proposal for budget cuts specifically exempts Israel’s aid package (unlike every domestic program you can imagine).
Of course, every one of these legislators criticizes US policies they disagree with and certainly US Presidents. But when it comes to Israel, they are drum majors for Netanyahu (God-appointed in Schumer’s case).
They should be ashamed of themselves. They aren’t.

U.S. officials told the Wall Street Journal that the move could be a significant step toward showing that Washington, who is often criticized of overlooking Israel’s reported nuclear arsenal, could be even handed in its attempt to ensure the Middle East is free of nuclear weapons.
“We’ve made a proposal to them [Egypt] that goes beyond what the U.S. has been willing to do before,” senior U.S. officials told the WSJ, adding that they didn’t believe that would happen without first achieving major advances in Arab-Israeli peace talks.
Ellen Tauscher, undersecretary of state for arms control and international security told the WSJ that Washington was “concerned that the conditions are not right unless all members of the region participate, which would be unlikely unless there is a comprehensive peace plan which is accepted,”
Tauscher added that Washington had already discussed the possibility of creating such a nuclear-free zone with the Arab League and other members of the Nonaligned Movement.
Egypt and other Arab states have been demanding that any final declaration that might come out of the month-long UN nuclear nonproliferation conference planned to open on Monday would include the call for the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.
Israel is widely believed to have a sizable nuclear arsenal although it has not acknowledged it.
Egypt is also demanding the convening of an international conference next year with Israel’s participation to discuss that issue. Diplomats have said the United States and Russia are trying to find a way to satisfy Egypt’s demands.
Many NPT signatories would also like the review conference to call for universality of the treaty – meaning that Israel, Pakistan and India should be pressured to sign and get rid of any warheads they have. North Korea withdrew from the NPT in 2003 and tested nuclear devices in 2006 and 2009.
Senior Obama administration officials told the WSJ Saturday that Washington would support a conference such as the one demanded by Egypt at a future date, saying that talks with Egypt on the subject would resume on the sidelines of this month’s UN conference in New York

The paper said this meant that Washington was to abstain from voting on the council’s anti-Israeli resolutions instead of vetoing them.
Washington has invariably invoked the veto power to block the UN resolutions against the Israeli aggression on the Palestinians and the regime’s building up the occupied lands.

“We will continue to speak out strongly for Israel’s right to self-defense and to oppose efforts to single Israel out unfairly for criticism,” he added.
The comments came as the Gaza Strip is far from recovering from the January 2008-September 2009 Israeli raids which killed more than 1,400 Palestinians.
The UN headquarters in New York is, meanwhile, set to host a review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The meeting is expected to make mention of Israel’s non-membership of the treaty despite its widely-reported ownership of hundreds of nuclear warheads.
Analysts, though, dismiss the prospects of any anti-Israeli progress, citing Washington’s guardianship of Tel Aviv’s interests
